ECO4 Extension 2026: What Changed and What It Means for Your Home

Ofgem's ECO4 scheme was extended once, by nine months, from 31 March 2026 to 31 December 2026. Energy suppliers got extra time but no extra targets or money. As of 29 October 2026 no second extension has been announced, and work only counts if it is finished before 1 January 2027.

Has ECO4 been extended? What the law changed

Yes, once, by nine months. The ECO4 extension moved the end of the scheme from 31 March 2026 to 31 December 2026. Energy suppliers got nine more months to finish their work, but no extra targets or money. For your home, what matters is the day the work is finished, because a measure only counts if it is completed before 1 January 2027.

The extension changed a handful of dates in the law behind the Energy Company Obligation and left almost everything else alone.

Why the government added extra time, and who it was for

The extra months were for energy suppliers and installers to finish what was already promised. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) said the extension is "intended solely to allow suppliers extra time to complete existing obligations and for installers to remediate".

"Remediate" means going back to put right poor work, such as faulty external wall insulation fitted under ECO4 or the Great British Insulation Scheme.

The decision came out of the ECO4 end date extension consultation:

  • August 2025: DESNZ asked whether ECO4 should run on for six to nine months
  • 215 responses: of the 211 that answered the main question, 167 said yes
  • 23 January 2026: the government response chose the full nine months
  • 25 March 2026: the ECO4 amendment order, SI 2026/361 was made, six days before the old end date, and took effect the next day

The government said the extra time also gives the scheme an "orderly close". Many who answered the consultation wanted to avoid a sudden gap in help for low income homes and to protect installer jobs.

The install date is the one that counts

The ECO4 Order only counts a measure that is "completed on or after 1st April 2022 and before 1st January 2027". A phone call, a survey or an approval letter does not count. The boiler has to be fitted and working.

Every job passes through these stages, and each one takes time:

  • Eligibility check: someone in the home meets a benefit or council route, and the home has a poor energy rating
  • Home survey: we look at the boiler, heating, loft and walls
  • Funding approval: an energy supplier agrees to pay for the work
  • Insulation, if needed: many homes need loft or wall insulation first, and it has to be complete by the day the boiler goes in, or earlier
  • Installation: a Gas Safe registered engineer fits the boiler, usually in 1 to 2 days on site once approved

How long the whole chain takes depends on your paperwork and the survey. If you start in December, there may not be enough days left for the survey, approval and fitting.

Where does your application stand?

The further your job has got, the safer it is. A home that is already surveyed and approved has far more room than one that has not been checked yet.

If your route is your council, our guide to the LA Flex scheme explains how it works. LA Flex is part of ECO4, so it closes on the same date, and some councils have already stopped taking new Flex requests. What is open depends on where you live. When does ECO4 end? Why websites disagree

The ECO4 scheme end date is 31 December 2026 in England, Scotland and Wales. Other dates you see for the ECO4 scheme ending trace back to one of these mix-ups:

  • "Ends March 2026": pages written before January 2026 and never updated. Some still show it months after the law changed.
  • "ECO4 has closed": usually a mix-up with the Great British Insulation Scheme. It can also mean one council's Flex route has shut, or one supplier has stopped taking new jobs.
  • "Runs into 2027": a misreading of the supplier paperwork deadline. Only the reporting dates moved into 2027.

Is ECO4 still available, and how much is already done?

ECO4 is still available until 31 December 2026. Ofgem's figures up to 6 October 2026 show 245,726 ECO4 projects submitted and 962,853 ECO4 measures notified.

Each energy supplier has its own target to reach by the end date. A supplier that has met its target, or is close to it, has no reason to take on new jobs. Several of the largest have already stopped. This is what each one had said publicly when we checked on 29 October 2026:

Energy supplierNew ECO4 applications
EDFStopped in early March 2026
British GasNo longer accepted
ScottishPowerNo longer accepted
Octopus EnergyIts ECO scheme page says the scheme is now closed
OVOStopped in October 2025

That does not close the scheme. Funding can still come from a supplier with room left in its target, or through a council Flex route, which is why one installer may say no while another can still help.

We are the installer, so we survey your home, fit the work and submit it under ECO4. Ofgem confirms you can get ECO4 help from any obligated energy supplier while staying with your current energy provider. There is no single ECO4 contact number either, so the quickest way to check your home is to ask an installer such as us.

Will ECO4 be extended again?

No second ECO4 extension has been announced, so plan as if the ECO4 deadline in 2026, 31 December, is final. The government also confirmed in the November 2025 Budget that no new supplier obligation will follow ECO4.

Other help after ECO4:

  • Low income in England: the Warm Homes: Local Grant is already open, and we help with the form and documents
  • Homeowners in England who want a heat pump: the heat pump grant gives money off whatever your income
  • The bigger picture to 2030: our page on the Warm Homes Plan covers what the government has promised

The "ECO5" name keeps appearing in adverts. Our ECO5 scheme page explains why that scheme does not exist.

Your plan for the last weeks of ECO4

Five steps give your job the best chance of being finished in time.

  • Check your eligibility today. Our ECO4 eligibility page lists the rules in full.
  • Find your proof of benefit, such as a recent award letter, so the check is not held up.
  • Book your survey for the earliest slot you can manage.
  • Clear the way for the surveyor, including the loft hatch, so insulation can be assessed on the same visit.
  • Ask for your install date in writing once your job is approved.

Is the ECO4 scheme legit? Yes, it is set out in law and run by Ofgem, but deadlines bring out scammers. Approved homes pay nothing for the funded work, and any extras are agreed in writing first, so treat these as warning signs:

  • A caller who says ECO4 has been extended into 2027, or that you can "lock in" ECO4 funding for next year
  • Pressure to sign today because it is your "last chance"
  • A fee to "hold your place"
  • A request for your bank details over the phone
  • An engineer who will not show you a Gas Safe ID card

ECO4 extension questions answered

My job is approved but not fitted. What if it misses 31 December?

A measure finished on 1 January 2027 or later does not count for ECO4, so the funding for it would fall away. Ask us to confirm in writing your install date, which energy supplier is funding the work, and what happens if the date slips. If your fitting date is in late December, ask whether insulation or other work could push it back.

Did the extension change who qualifies?

No. It only changed dates and deadlines. The household and home rules stayed as they were.

Is the ECO4 extension part of the Warm Homes Plan?

No. ECO4 is paid for by energy suppliers under the Energy Company Obligation. The Warm Homes Plan is separate government grant funding.

Does the extension apply in Scotland?

Yes. ECO4 has one end date across England, Scotland and Wales. It does not cover Northern Ireland. We survey and fit in England and Scotland.

Is the free boiler scheme still running?

Yes, for now. Most people who say "free boiler scheme" mean ECO4, which runs until 31 December 2026 for work that can be finished in time.
